About me

I am an Associate Professor of Strategy and Innovation and Director of PhD studies at ESMT Berlin (European School of Management and Technology).

I am an Associate Professor of Strategy and Innovation (with tenure) and Director of PhD studies at ESMT Berlin. I joined ESMT in 2011 after completing my Habilitation (2010) and my Doctorate in Management (2005) at Ludwig-Maximilians University LMU Munich. Also, I am currently a Senior Fellow at the Berlin Centre for Consumer Policies (BCCP) and serve on the boards of the European Policy for Intellectual Property Association EPIP and the Doctoral Program of the Berlin School of Economics.

My research interests cover the intersection of firm strategy, technological innovation, industrial organization and law. My research generally applies state of the art methods from econometrics and machine learning to large-scale data sets to derive insights that are based on solid empirical evidence. I am working on questions related to the interaction of the changing landscape of intellectual property rights (in particular patent systems) and firms’ long term strategy regarding their innovation activities. Results of my work have been Published in top journals. At the moment, I work on a number of exciting projects analyzing incentives for drug development.

Engaging with students and the public on important innovation policy issues is a key aspect of my work. Main parts of my Teaching combine scholarly work on innovation within and across organizations with practical insights from real world case studies. Beyond the classroom, I have worked with numerous clients on questions of innovation as well as data analytics.
